| Under the leadership of Harvey Humphries, the Athens Bulldog Swim Club has been serving the Athens-area community for over forty years. Now, you have a chance to say thank you, and honor Harvey with a contribution to take ABSC into the next phase of service and growth. Whether you knew us in our days at Stegeman Pool, when we were “the little club where everybody knows your name," or you were with us in the Ramsey years, ABSC remains a great place to swim, and continues to help athletes develop not just in the pool, but in life. And while we still strive to be the club where everybody knows your name, and while we continue to produce topnotch athletes, we now have nearly 400 swimmers and practice at four area pools. Yet as exciting as all this has been, the best is yet to come. The ABSC Board of Directors has been saving and investing, in the hope of someday purchasing a pool of our own. That day has come, as ABSC recently purchased the Summer Hill Recreation Club.
The Twelve Oaks location is a 6 lane outdoor pool with a diving well located in North Oconee County. It hosts the powerhouse Oconee Recreational League Team, the Summer Hill Barracudas. Less than three miles away, you'll find the Chestnut Hill location. It boasts a 4-lane heated indoor pool, a 6-lane heated outdoor pool, weight and cardio rooms, classrooms, and office space. This facility has already allowed us to expand our offerings in terms of dryland, weight training, and classroom instruction. So, while we intend always to have a presence at the UGA Ramsey Center, having satellite locations that we own will help us continue to grow our developmental programs, including our newest division, the Bulldog Swim School. This learn-to-swim program has already brought the skill of swimming to hundreds of children in the greater Athens area.
Owning these two pools gives us room to grow, but to take full advantage of our facilities, we need to undertake a number of facility improvements, including the installation of a a tent to cover the outdoor six-lane pool at the Chestnut Hill location. We are therefore initiating a capital campaign with a goal of raising $300,000 over three years. We already have pledges in excess of $80,000, so while we making great progress towards achieving our goal, we still have a way to go. Once we achieve our final goal, our plan is to honor our longtime Head Coach and leader by naming one of our new purchases The Humphries Pool at Chestnut Hill. ABSC is, and always has been, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, meaning that any donations made to the program are tax deductible (check with your tax preparer to be sure you qualify for this type of deduction). While we are grateful for donations in any amount, gifts of $1000 or more will acknowledged with a commemorative brick or plaque at the facility. Donations may be made on our GoFundMe page, or directly to the club by check, wire, or bank transfer (click the links below for information on the latter).
